MINNESOTA MOMENTS March / April 2010

VOLUME Vii, EDITION 2

Features

24 | Rudy
Tom Ruether turns the tiny village of Pearl Lake into a large Irish community during the middle of March.

For the past couple of years, in mid-March, the community known as Pearl Lake, aka Marty, population about 20, becomes a small city of revelers. The people, mostly dressed in green, come from cities near and far. They come to Pearl Lake from burgs such as Cold Spring and Kimball and Watkins. They travel from St. Cloud and the Twin Cities. Some even venture from as far away as Duluth. And they come because of one man. His name: Tom Ruether, or Rudy, as he’s known to most.

The quadriga, at the base of the Capitol dome, overlooks St. Paul.30 | Destination St. Paul
Come with us as we tour the State Capitol, Minnesota History Center and Cathedral of Saint Paul.

St. Paul. Even the name suggests a certain sense of history that defines Minnesota’s capital city. From its humble beginning as Pig’s Eye, this Mississippi River town flourishes today not only as the center of state government, but as a visitor destination. There’s a certain charm to this place that feels more down-to-earth and less cosmopolitan than neighboring Minneapolis.

Everything goes better with Coca-Cola
: BILL AND BECKY Taszarek had been working on their new “family room” for years, they just didn’t know it. The Little Falls couple had been avidly collecting Coca-Cola paraphernalia since their now-grown children were toddlers. It was a family affair.

12 Moments in time: Lost: Simple trek into the woods turns a bit frightening I HAVE HUNTED DEER in the north woods all my life and never have been lost. Momentarily confused for several hours, but never lost. With that definition in mind, my wife, Terri, and I have ventured forth on many, many hiking trails. I make sure we have a rudimentary trail map or, at the very least, I have some knowledge of the trail ahead before embarking. However, rules sometimes are violated.

16 Moments in time:The end of Jack
JACK DIED LAST week. He was only 16. I’d known him for 10 years and worked with him in the heat and the cold. He wasn’t afraid of pigs, not like Pete. He wasn’t afraid of much— except bugs.
