Lonsdale photographer captures moments for military families
Now she is easing the burden of that separation by offering free portrait sessions to the families of deployed soldiers at her Cherished Moments Photography studio in rural Lonsdale. Through project Miles & Milestones ™, Vosejpka will do a photo shoot and then give the family a free 8-by-10-inch portrait and two 4-by-6-inch pictures. The package is valued at about $140.
“I thought what a neat way to give back to the military families,” Vosejpka said after learning of the nationally-growing program at a photo seminar. “I want to document these times in their children’s lives.”
For Vosejpka that means capturing the personalities of the children in natural, unposed shots set against a studio backdrop of an American flag or a plain white background. She encourages her subjects to dress in red, white and blue to portray a patriotic theme. Aside from that, she lets the child’s personality shine through. “I let them be them,” she said. She wants a soldier parent, perhaps stationed in Iraq, to see the portrait and say, “That’s the child I remember.”
Vosejpka has a personal connection to the military. Her nephew Josh Vosejpka serves in the Marines while her cousin Eric Mahn is stationed with the National Guard in Iraq. Both are from the Northfield area.
