May/June 06 Issue Cover

A feast for you eyes as well as your taste buds

In this issue of Minnesota Moments, there are several stories that will make you feel like settling into a hammock or your favorite piece of lawn furniture and getting lost for a few moments.

Our cover story features some pie bakers from across this great state. Who doesn’t enjoy a mouth-watering piece of pie, especially if it’s homemade?

Everyone you meet seems to have a different favorite. For some, it’s one of the berry varieties — cherry, blueberry, blackberry, raspberry — the choices are too numerous to list. For others, nothing beats a rhubarb pie, especially in early spring, or apple, or banana cream. Come fall, pumpkin pie rules. And, even though we’d probably never admit it, isn’t one of the sinful pleasures of going to a church dinner or family gathering the joy you experience when it comes time for dessert and the pies are presented? Who wants seconds?

We hope you enjoy our pie offering and get a chance to try some of these favorites this summer.

And speaking of summer, contributor John DuBois takes us back in time to the summers of his youth as a baseball fan and card collector. What boy growing up in Minnesota in the ‘60s didn’t covet a pack of baseball cards with that pink, dry-as-sawdust gum inside? If you were lucky enough to score a card with one of the Minnesota Twins on it — Harmon, Zoilo, Tony, Camillo, Earl, Mud Cat — you felt blessed from above. Unfortunately, most of us amateur collectors have lost track of our cards, unlike John, who is quite fortunate to have had a guardian angel like the one he writes about.

If you’re looking for a fun activity this summer, read the story on the remodeled historic State Theatre in Hutchinson and then plan a trip there to not only watch a movie, but to step back in time to an era when movie houses were something special. You will be amazed by this beautiful small-town theatre!

You’ll also find stories on travel, gardening, home decorating and more, including a handful of essays from some regular contributors and some who are new to the pages of Minnesota Moments.

Enjoy!
