Minnesota autumn is awash with colors.
What better time than autumn to talk about colors?
With the changing of the seasons from summer to fall comes a cornucopia of color to our landscape. Most noticeable, of course, are the changes in the leaves. Gone are the verdant green leaves of summer that kept us cool on hot days. Instead, we’re treated to crimsons and golds that would delight any pirate if he stumbled upon them in a treasure chest.
And, it’s not only the leaves that change color.
Nothing is as mesmerizing as a late autumn sunset as the wind blows and farmers rush to harvest their crops before the winter snows arrive. Geese can be spotted flying south. Below, children are nestled in fields of orange as they look for a scary pumpkin to become that perfect jack-o’-lantern.
And, the black of night on Halloween seems much more foreboding than the black of a July night. Maybe it’s the black of a witch’s costume and the black of an alley cat that give the late October night a much more ominous tone?
Every color associated with a Minnesota autumn seems more vivid. Yellow corn cobs hang from dried cornstalks waiting to be picked. Green and red tractors fill the sky with bellowing charcoal-colored smoke. The first wisps of chimney smoke not only fill the sky with trails of color, but emit a smell that is unmistakably appealing.
