A
salute to the good life and those who have preserved it
Who doesn’t like a good old-fashioned backyard barbecue?
We at Minnesota Moments sure do. And because we’re outdoor grilling fanatics, we thought we’d share some recipes with you.
Whether your cooking surface is that Hibachi you’ve had since college, or that trusty old rusty Weber you’ve just not been able to part with, or that $900 gas grill the kids and the Mrs. gave you for Father’s Day that took you until Independence Day to assemble, have at it.
And speaking of Father’s Day and grilling, this time of year presents you with oodles of opportunities to dine in the great outdoors.
Granted, picnics are a thing of the past. Who has spread a checkered tablecloth in a pasture since Bonnie and Clyde?
But gatherings in backyards or at poolside, on patios or decks, in city parks or campgrounds are as commonplace as the buzzing of our favorite pest, the beloved Minnesota mosquito.
As we celebrate the return of warmer weather with family and friends this season, let’s take a moment to remember those who made this lifestyle possible — those who have served their country in the military. Memorial Day is a perfect time to do that. But let’s not stop there. Every time we gather to enjoy life as we know it, we should pause to reflect a bit on the sacrifices many have made.
In this issue of Minnesota Moments we do just that with the retelling of some stories. For every story told, however, there are thousands of voices that remain silent.
If you’ve never attended a Memorial Day service, take the time to do so this year. You will feel goose bumps on your arms as the sound of taps wafts skyward. And the hair on the back of your neck will stand as the names of the veterans who have since passed away are read aloud.
We salute all veterans — those who have died; those who have served with honor; and those who are still protecting us today.
As always, this issue of Minnesota Moments features some excellent writing by contributors from around the state. If you, or someone you know, have a story you would like to submit for publication, feel free to do so.
Thanks, and have a fun and safe grilling season.
Mike Nistler and Diane Wimmer
