Just because the weather outside is white and gray and dreary doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your garden during the winter months.

Your garden provides you with colors galore during the summer months, thanks to the flowers and plants you grow.

In the winter, you just need to look at things a little differently. It is not that difficult. Just let your imagination run wild.

First, start with your bird bath that you emptied and stored in the back of the garden shed this fall when the first hints of frost were in the air.

Instead of filling it with water for the birds, try some corn. The birds (and squirrels) will enjoy the winter feast. Or, put that ready-to-be-discarded Christmas wreath to good use and lay it in the bird bath for a decorative piece to spruce (no pun intended) up that blah back yard.

Instead of recycling that Christmas tree, “plant” it in the garden to give birds refuge during windy winter storms. You can even string white lights on it if an outlet is within reach. And while you’re at it, your garden shed, backyard biffy or trees can be trimmed in white lights as well to add some extra light to the dark months of January and February.

And if you decorated your Christmas tree with a string of popcorn and cranberries, don’t toss it in the garbage, but string it from tree branches until warmer weather arrives.
